At a glance
- The most common cause of a FranceConnect failure is mismatched personal details between two accounts: an accent or a missing second first name is enough.
- The YRIS account has not been accepted since 1 July 2026: you need to switch to another digital identity account.
- If no account works, an authorized provider can complete the procedure without FranceConnect.
- At cartegrise.com, a simple email account is enough, and file processing plus the provisional certificate are announced within 12 to 24 hours of receiving the complete file.
The ownership transfer form is filled in, the documents are ready, all that’s left is to confirm. One click on « S’identifier avec FranceConnect » (Log in with FranceConnect), choosing the tax authority account, the password. And the page goes back to the start, or shows an error. A second attempt, same result.
Before looking for another route, a few minutes of checking are often enough. The solutions below are ranked from simplest to most reliable: the first three are free and keep the procedure on the official channel, the fourth goes through an authorized provider when nothing else works.
The solutions, from simplest to most reliable
- Check the personal details on the account you’re using. Log in directly to the chosen account (tax authority, health insurance, La Poste…) and check surname, first names, date and place of birth, accents included. Allow a few minutes.
- Try another digital identity account. FranceConnect offers several providers: if one fails, another may work. One attempt takes two or three minutes.
- Switch browsers or update the app. A private browsing window or a different browser rules out extensions, ad blockers, and rejected cookies. It only takes a few minutes.
- Complete the procedure through an authorized provider, without FranceConnect. Create a standard account with an email and password, then submit the file. At cartegrise.com, processing and the provisional certificate are announced within 12 to 24 hours of receiving the complete file.
The order matters: the first three steps cost nothing and resolve most cases. The fourth has a price, the provider’s service fee, but it no longer depends on FranceConnect at all.
Identify the cause of the failure
FranceConnect’s official help pages devote an article to the question « Je reçois une erreur lors de ma connexion, que faire ? » (What should I do if I get an error when logging in?). The causes fall into four groups.
Mismatched personal details between two accounts
FranceConnect doesn’t create an identity: it relays the one held by an existing account, with the surname, first names, date and place of birth. If this data isn’t identical from one account to another, the login can fail. The most frequent discrepancies are minor: a missing accent, a second first name present on one account and absent on the other, a birth municipality spelled differently. The correction is made with the provider concerned, not on the vehicle registration site.
A closed identity account (YRIS)
According to FranceConnect’s official help pages, the YRIS account can no longer be used since 1 July 2026. Anyone who used it now finds their login fails, whatever the service targeted. This isn’t an outage: you need to switch providers.
An outdated browser or app
A FranceConnect login sends you from one site to another, then back again. An outdated browser version, an ad blocker, or rejected cookies can break this back-and-forth. The typical symptom is a page that spins endlessly or a return to the starting screen.
A service outage
Rarer, it affects all users at the same time, whatever account is chosen. If two different providers fail on two different devices, the fault lies with the service itself, not the account. Waiting a few hours is often enough, provided the procedure’s deadline allows it.
Switch to another digital identity account
FranceConnect lets you choose between several identity providers: impots.gouv.fr, ameli.fr, L’Identité Numérique La Poste, Orange’s MobileConnect et moi, and msa.fr. Each relies on its own credentials: tax number, social security number, La Poste email address, mobile number.
Most adults have at least one impots.gouv.fr or ameli.fr account, often without giving it much thought. Recovering a forgotten password on one of these services usually takes less time than looking for another route. If the first account fails because of a personal-details mismatch, the second may go through, since its data comes from a different administration.
A practical tip: before restarting the procedure, log in directly to the chosen provider’s own site, outside FranceConnect. If the login works there, the account is active and the password is correct; if it fails, the problem is fixed at the source, with the provider, before coming back to the vehicle registration. This check avoids repeating unsuccessful attempts on the form.
This step keeps the procedure on the official channel, free aside from taxes. As a reminder, the deadline for registering a vehicle in your own name is one month after purchase, according to service-public.gouv.fr: a blockage of a few days is therefore not a problem, one near the end of the deadline more so. The details of the procedure itself are covered in our article on transferring vehicle registration ownership.
Register your vehicle through an authorized provider
When no account works, or when time is short, the last solution is to stop going through FranceConnect altogether. A provider authorized by the Ministry of the Interior enters the file directly into the vehicle registration system. Identifying the customer is then its own responsibility: it can offer a standard account.
At cartegrise.com, an account created with an email address and password is enough; the site details this route on its page vehicle registration without FranceConnect. It has been authorized since 2009 (Préfecture authorization no. 9744, Treasury approval no. 14871), reports over 1 million files processed, and announces processing plus the provisional certificate within 12 to 24 hours of receiving the complete file. The file is checked before being registered, and it can be tracked from the customer area, 7 days a week.
The taxes are the same as on the official channel, but service fees are added: at cartegrise.com, from €44.90 to €99.90 for an ownership transfer depending on the regional tax amount, and €44.90 for an address change.
Other authorized sites also offer a route without FranceConnect: guichetcartegrise.com displays a « Je n’utilise pas FranceConnect » (I don’t use FranceConnect) option, carte-grise.org states it doesn’t require FranceConnect authentication, and cartegriseminute.fr also offers a FranceConnect login that simplifies the procedure for those who have access to it. The site-by-site details, with authorizations, timelines and fees, can be found in our ranking of authorized sites without FranceConnect.
To put the online procedure into perspective as a whole, our guide to registering your vehicle online without a prefecture covers each step. And if the blockage happens during a move, the vehicle registration address change has its own legal deadline.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if FranceConnect isn't working for my vehicle registration?
Follow this order: check the personal details on the account you’re using, try another digital identity account, then switch browsers. These three steps are free and solve most blockages. If nothing works, an authorized provider can complete the procedure with a standard account, without FranceConnect, within the one month deadline after purchase.
Why does FranceConnect refuse my login?
FranceConnect passes on the identity from an existing account: surname, first names, date and place of birth. An accent, a second first name, or a place of birth entered differently can be enough to make the login fail. The other causes are a closed identity account, such as YRIS since 1 July 2026, an outdated browser, or, more rarely, a service outage.
Can I register my vehicle without FranceConnect?
Yes, through a provider authorized by the Ministry of the Interior, who enters the file directly into the registration system. cartegrise.com, authorized since 2009 (authorization no. 9744, Treasury approval no. 14871), offers an account with just an email and password. Its service fees are added on top of the taxes: from €44.90 to €99.90 for an ownership transfer, depending on the regional tax.
My YRIS account no longer works, what should I do?
The YRIS account can no longer be used with FranceConnect since 1 July 2026, according to FranceConnect’s official help pages. You need to choose another provider from the list offered, for example impots.gouv.fr or ameli.fr. Without any other account available, the procedure can be handed over to an authorized provider.
How long does it take to receive your vehicle registration certificate through an authorized site?
At cartegrise.com, file processing and the provisional certificate are announced within 12 to 24 hours of receiving the complete file. The final registration certificate then arrives about 2 to 3 days after the provisional certificate. In the meantime, the provisional certificate lets you drive for 1 month, in France only.
